What does maraVilla mean?
/DISCOVER THE MEANING OF MARAVILLA
En español, “maravilla” describes something that produces wonder and amazement…a thing whose extraordinary qualities are something to marvel at.
It’s the perfect adjective for Bucerias – a quiet village on Mexico’s west coast that’s now coming into its own as an easygoing resort town.
Just 25 minutes from Puerto Vallarta’s International Airport – a direct flight away from many cities across Canada – Bucerias is a fantastic (and fantastically affordable) destination not only for sick-of-winter sun-seekers but for adventurous cyclists eager to explore some roads less travelled.
As anyone who’s had the pleasure of biking in the Bucerias area and the nearby Sierra Madre will tell you, the terrain is varied, the roads are well maintained, the traffic is light, the drivers are patient and respectful, and the climate is a winter-weary Canadian’s dream.
For an expert introduction to cycling in Mexico, nothing beats supported tours with experienced guide at Bici Bucerias.

Bici Bucerias Hill Climb - Tour de Bowness 2016
We were honoured to be a part of the 2016 Tour de Bowness this year. While we were originally to have sponsored the KOM and QOM competition for the hill climb at the Canada Olympic Park, the drastic weather caused the event to be cancelled shortly after the CAT 5 competitors finished.

Well, after packing up and getting in the car, it seemed like pizza and beer was in order. So off we went to Ripe Tomato in Marda Loop to pick up a few pies to go and have a beer while waiting and watching the rain.

Road cycling to yoga....
I stumbled on road cycling last fall when the hybrid I used to scoot between yoga studios and tour the river on was cut from its lock outside of my house. Being as it was end of season when my beloved bike disappeared, I managed to snag an amazing deal on a demo TREK Emonda SL from Ridley’s bike shop in Kensington.
Road bike vs hybrid
The difference between the two bikes was remarkable. I could ride longer and faster with much more comfort in my body. As a yoga teacher/nerd, this was huge. I’ve become so accustomed to moving painlessly throughout the day that though I loved riding my hybrid, I would often top out at an hour-long ride due to discomfort and fatigue. Being equipped to ride longer and with more ease encouraged me to discover more parts of the city and to move beyond the city limits.
Strength and endurance through cycling
Something else began to happen. I started to develop a strength and endurance that complimented my mat practice. Having been practicing yoga for over ten years and teaching for a little over 6, I’ve spent countless hours in studios as a teacher and student. I’ve always loved movement and expelling energy. Admittedly, in the earlier years my practice I leaned into a dangerous territory of hypermobility. With experience and a lot of trial and error I started to develop my practice and teaching style to incorporate strength and stability in order to provide a more rounded approach to the practice. So when I started to feel tightness in my hips from riding, I was thrilled because I could see that balancing the two activities could optimize my pelvis/hip health.
Yoga and cycling combined
Fast forward to now my practice is much more balanced but adding cycling into the mix has opened up a whole new avenue for strength development and endurance, as well as new way of syncing my mind and body. Yoga is still my first love but cycling has taken me out of the studio and back into the elements of ever shifting environments. In yoga I speak to being present with ones body, watching how it moves and responds, about how the body speaks a language of instinct and intuition. When I get on my bike, this language is further refined to interact with the mechanics of the bike and the conditions of the pavement. The movement has it’s own meditative quality plus there is opportunity to sincerely experience scenery and surroundings you miss while racing by in a car.
Yoga takes away that back pain
In speaking with avid cyclists who include yoga in their training programs, I’m told that yoga has been key in returning mobility to their bodies, eliminating chronic back pain and enhancing comfort to their ride. Additionally, flexibility is essential for optimal positioning on a bike and breath work can help with mental focus.
Road cycling has caught me a fever
I love alternating between my yoga mat and the saddle, so much so that I’ve decided to combine the two in retreat-style camps, or camp-style retreats – depending on what world you’re coming from – and create a vacation offering that I would seek out. The first collaboration is happening this Winter in Bucerias Mexico, I’d love it if you came!

Mexican Road Cycling Tours - Conquering La Bufa with Bici Bucerias
/Bici Bucerias Epic Climbing Challenge
La Bufa
The Start
I have always wanted to ride La Bufa which is a climb in of itself out of San Sebastian del Oeste in Jalisco Mexico. The elevation chart really puts things in perspective. We started just north of Guayabitos. The first 5 km is on nice pavement and is basically a gentle steady climb to Alta Vista. From there, we crossed over 20 km of gnarly cobble including some sharp 12 - 18% gradients to zap the legs.
Gravel Cycling and River Crossings
Now that we were good and warmed up, we crossed the Ameca river and road several km of gravel before entering the cobble streets of Las Palmas. From Las Palmas, it is a steady 28 km climb to La Estancia. It is easy to put too much effort in this part of the ride. We road smart and we rolled steady.
Climbing to San Sebastian del Oeste
The climb to San Sebastian starts in La Estancia. While this is not a long climb, there are around 3 km of double digit paved grades to deal with before you finish with a leg busting final section completely made up of Mexican Cobble.
The Climb to La Bufa
Words really do not describe what you are to expect on the climb to La Bufa. Now, if you showed up on a mountain bike with some low gearing, you could eventually spin yourself to the top. We electected to do the entire ride on cross bikes. The best gearing we had was a 39 on the front and a 32 on the back. While this would be ok on 12 - 15% paved grades, try mashing that gear ration on 25% sections of cobble! My goodness... there were times we just could not peddle and had to walk the bikes to a more gentle section of 18%!
Conquering La Bufa
I have to admit, the last few km I found myself actually being angry at this climb - It was so demoralizing. That being said, once we reached the summit, there was such an amazing sense of accomplishment. This is definitely one of the toughest non-racing rides I have ever done. I will be back!

Sayulita Bike Tour?
This is a great clip to get a feel for the ride from Bucerias to Sayulita. The awesome things is that it can also be done in reverse if you are staying in Sayulita! From Bucerias we head out of town to La Cruz and then ride around 8km on a coastal road with almost traffic and new pavement. Amazing coffee and a lemonade awaits you in Sayulita before we return. Three short but challenging climbs makes this a great ride to prep for the big mountains!
Mexican Cycling Tours in Puerto Vallarta - Road Cycling and Majestic Climbing
/Wow... who would have thought that right outside the city of Puerto Vallarta that there is such amazing riding? If you like to climb, we have a ride for you! If you don't consider yourself a pure climber but you are relatively fit, this is the perfect profile. We start off with a nice 16 km rolling ride along the coast. Once we pass Boca de Tomatlan, we head up into the jungle from sea level to around 750 meters. This is a steady but gentle climb. At the top, you move into another eco system and will be surrounded by a beautiful pine forest (pinos). Below is a video of some of what to expect!
Mexico Road Cylcing - Bici Bucerias Tour - La Virgen
/This is one of our favourite rides. We start in Las Palmas at around 150 meters above sea level and then ascend to just under 1900 meters over the course of 40 km. The last 7 km of the climb to the pass of the Virgin is incredibly tough. 8 - 18 % grades with a 6.5 km final average at just under 10%. This is a long ride and the video is condensed into 5 minutes...

Top 10 Reasons to Cycle in Mexico
/Top 10 Reasons - Cycling Mexico
We have had held some amazing tours in 2015 and now we are looking forward to an amazing 2016 of riding with our guests. The one resounding thing that we hear from all of our guests is that Mexico is one of the best places that they have every cycled. This got us thinking that we should send out a newsletter with the top 10 reasons to hope a flight to Mexico and make us your destination for your spring cycling training for 2016.
#1 Proximity to Canada and the US
Bici Bucerias.com
Many cities have direct and non-stop flights with total travel time well under 5 hours. I know a lot of people that go to Hawaii, Europe or even drive to the Okanagan from Calgary. A direct flight to Puerto Vallarta cuts a lot of hours off the travel time. Flights have been as cheap as $500 return from Calgary!
#2 Cost
The cost of living in Mexico is dramatically lower than in the US or Canada. Everything from accommodations, transportation to food can be quite a bit lower. For example, a mid range hotel in Phoenix (using the Homewood Suites in Phoenix/Scottsdale) will run you $1,267 for one week.
Bucerias Vacation Rentals - www.MyMexicanVilla.com
A fabulous one bedroom garden villa in the heart of Bucerias (see www.MyMexicanVilla.com) is only $654 including all fees. Another good example for cyclists is massage which is great to pair with training. A one hour massage in Canada or the US will usually cost between $75 to $100. There are lots of options for qualified massage therapists here in Bucerias that will cost you under $30
#3 Quiet Safe Roads for Mexican Cycling
Contrary to popular belief, there are some amazing secondary roads that can provide you hundreds of kilometres of cycling options. We have several amazing rides that we put on our schedules. Some of our rides include nice easy flat country farm roads just east of Bucerias, beautiful rolling terrain from Punta de Mita to Sayulita, an epic cobblestone climb to the town of San Sebastian and so much more
